Common Kingfisher Bird


Common Kingfisher / Kingfisher Conservation Status :


There are many kinds of  species birds in the world, Kingfisher is one of them.Kingfishers are a group of small to medium-sized, brightly colored birds in the order Coraciiformes.Kingfishers have large heads, long, sharp, pointed bills, short legs, and stubby tails.
Kingfishers are found by still or slow flowing water such as beel- jheel, lakes, canals and rivers in lowland areas. In winter, some individuals move to estuaries and the coast. Occasionally they may visit suitably sized garden ponds.


Common Kingfishers measure 17 – 19 centimeters in length, weight between 34 – 46 grams and have a wingspan of 25 centimeters. Their beak is around  4 centimeters long and pointed. It has short, orange colour legs.Kingfishers are very brightly colour. The colour of their wings is a blue or green colour & tail are bright blue colour. Their underparts are bright orange and small sized, white bib underneath their beaks, on their throats.


The kingfishers head is blue with orange marks ahead and behind the birds eyes and a white mark on both sides of the head. These bright, lovely color is a lot of visible when the bird is flying.


Male kingfishers and Female kingfishers are almost identical except for an orange colorations with a black tip on the lower part of the females beak/mandibles.Young kingfishers are similar as adults. They have duller and greener upper-parts, paler underparts, black beak and black legs.

Kingfishers are very sensitive in cold weather & particularly harsh in winter, can seriously reduce kingfisher populations.
